Birthday’s, Rugby

February 29, 2008 at 12:07 pm (Freebies, Music, Rugby)

Well today is my birthday.  For me birthdays have become rather mundane, the last ten plus years my better half has been so busy with his business, social life and own things that he managed to stuff up each and every birthday, Christmas etc.

I make it easy for him, I only have a birthday every four years but not even for that can he get his act togeher.  He made a much bigger attempt than usual this year and he gets ten out of ten for trying.  I am still alone for the evening but he was here this morning and we had a super prawn and calamari braai for lunch.  He can be really sweet when he wants to.

Yesterday my parcel from finally arrived, I’d managed to track down Steve Hofmeyr’s Tribute II and his third album Steve as well as an omnibus of The Chronicles of Narnia, a lovely thick heavy book.

The Steve albums are interesting, back then when they came out I bought the tapes, I made copies and listened to them in the car.  When they packed up after several years and many hours of listening, I wanted to make  some new ones only to discover my original tapes had been stolen.  So I have not heard them in over 15 years and yet it was like I’d listened to them yesterday.

Several of the songs have stood the test of time and are also available on his Greatest Hits albums but some songs are better left to memory, must admit though he had very few of those.

Hoe Voel Jy Nou has always been one of my favorites and his version of Mammy Blue is by far the best one. His second album Only Me is not availble at any of the places I looked and is the only one in the collection I don’t have.  If anyone knows where I can get it, I will really appreciate it.

Otherwise it’s a quiet day, I am going to ignore the pile of dishes, read some blogs, hope the lovely clouds bring more rain and enjoy the rugby.  I am still trying to get my head around the new rules and the unacceptable hidings our teams have been taking, come on guys if the Aussies and the Kiwis can play to the rules so can we, we certainly do not need to take a beating.

Nowhere did I read or hear anything of Fred Michelak’s debut performance and I have to admit I was pretty impressed with him.  I enjoyed the interview SA Rugby magazine did.

I am a Cheetah supporter by default, when I started watching Rugby seriously it was nearing the end of the Curry Cup season in 2005 and was told that I had to support a team.  I have always been a bit of a “draad sitter” a teacher called me that in standard seven or something.  So I was just minding my own business and enjoying the game when a Sharks supporter said to me, you really should pick a team and I said “Uhm Ahhhh….Actually I like the all Blacks”

So I like Bryan Habana but I am not a Bulls Supporter, I like Francois Steyn but that team plays like Karoo Rain, always full of promise but no delivery, but the Cheetahs they play like a D9 Bulldozer so he said well then support the Cheetahs and that’s how it happened.

And now I am a Springbok Supporter in soul until the politics kills the team in which case I will have to revert back to the All Blacks, Dan Carter is still my big favorite anyway.

Well have a good weekend all.

Scrapbooking Freebies

February 27, 2008 at 5:23 pm (Freebies, Scrapbooking)

I am busy with an Etosha inspired kit, I don’t have that much time to work on it and I get bored quickly so progress is slow.  I have a new PC so I am still setting up the settings and filters in PSP and by the time I have that done I want to go and do something else, but I will get there.

Here are some Wordart Elements for you.

I love this quote.

I used lyrics from Steve Hofmeyr’s beautiful song, Love’s the Light off his album Decade, for this frame type Wordart. (Size 299kb)

Opium Tea by Nick Cave

Here I sleep the morning through
Until the call to prayer awakes me
And there is nothing to do but rise
And follow the day wherever it takes me
I stand at the window and look at the sea
Then I make me a pot of opium tea

Down at the port I watch the boats come in
Watching boats come in can do something to you
And the kids gather round with outstretched hand
And I toss them a diram or two
And I wonder if my children are thinking of me
For I am what I am and what will be will be

I wonder if my kids are thinking of me
And I smile and I sip my opium tea

At night the sea lashes the rust red ramparts
And the shapes of hooded men move past me
And the mad moaning wind, it laughs and it laughs
At the strange lot that fate has cast me
And the cats on the rampart sing merrily

That I am what I am and what will be will be
The cats on the rampart sing merrily
And I sit and I drink my opium tea

I’m a prisoner here, I can never go home
There is nothing here to win or to lose
There are no choices needing to be made at all
Not even the choice of having to choose
I am a prisoner, yes, but I am also free
‘Cause I am what I am and what will be will be
I’m a prisoner here, yes, but I’m also free
And I smile and I sip my opium tea

Stupid Things People Do

February 20, 2008 at 1:29 pm (life)

Today I want to devote some time to the stupid things people do, the last few days have delivered some real bright sparks.  I’d like to include the estate agent I rent from but I fear that she has not yet reached her peak.

Unfortunately I do not have images of them all but here goes, in no particular order.

During the Cheetahs/Lions match the camera panned in on the crowd, there was a young woman with a small baby on her shoulder, taking a long deep drag from her cigarette, yuch.  How is it possible that a woman in today’s world does not realise how bad smoking is for babies, no wonder they have to make laws to stop people harming their own children, as if crime does not supply the law makers with enough work. I fully understand the need to smoke, I don’t smoke, but I understand.  I do not understand how you can smoke around children.

The next one is people who get sick from taking the wrong medication and then they blame the chemist. I for one will never ever take any medication without reading the enclosed pamflet, the doctor will never tell you everything, he simply does not have the time. And before you take strong medication you should inform yourself as to what it’s for, how it works and what the side effects are so you can also know when you should stop taking it immediately.  Then you should also see that the pills you got and the problem the doctor diagnosed are not compatable.  Just read the pamphlet, it is not packaging material.  And if there is no pamphlet Google it!  It is your duty to inform yourself and you cannot blame someone else if you get sick from wrong medications you took yourself.  It’s another matter if the doctor gives you the wrong injection but this was not the case.

And then, oh boy, this one just made me shake my head.  Someone sent R 150 000.00 worth of sms for a competition to win a BMW, bright fucking spark, goodness. And now they blame the organizers of the competition and the self phone company, no one, ever forced you to send so many sms’s, don’t you have anything better to do?? Enough said.

This guy tried to cross the river in a sedan car….

Picture from Republikein Monday 18 February, taken by Nico van Dyk

And this guy thought he could cycle across….

These brilliant photos were in Republikein 15 and 18 February taken by Francois Poolman.

Needless to say we have had allot of rain.

Have a good day all.

Heard This

February 14, 2008 at 2:46 pm (Quotes)

The thing with addiction is, it never ends well. Because eventually whatever it was that was getting us high stops feeling good and starts to hurt.

Still, they say you don’t kick the habit until you hit rock bottom. But how do you know when you are there?

Because no matter how badly the thing is hurting you, sometimes letting go hurts even worse.
